This May Be The End To Gray Hair

Remember the first time you found a shiny gray hair and thought to yourself, “Holy crap, am I old?!” Fast-forward a few years: That single gray hair has multiplied into a million and you spend many hours--and dollars--at the salon trying to cover them up. Well, ladies, the end of your woes could be in sight. Researchers at University College London have identified the gene responsible for gray hair, and they’ve published those findings in the journal Nature Communications. They looked at more than 6,000 men and women from Native American, African and European ancestry and figured out the one thing in our DNA that makes us more or less likely to go silver in our later years. OK…but is there anything to be done about it? Well, sort of. Now that they’ve identified the gene--called IRF4--scientists suspect it can be turned off, which means researchers and eventually beauty companies can begin developing new products, from pills to shampoos, that stop gray hairs from appearing in the first place. It may not be the fountain of youth, but it could be the end of dyeing your roots.
