7 Bad Skin Habits You Need to Break

We’ll spare you the poor-skin-care no-brainers: smoking, sleeping with your makeup on, not drinking enough water, overdoing it on the peanut-butter cups… But there’s a whole bunch of skin sins you’re committing without even knowing it. Here are seven bad habits you can break now for a clearer, healthier face.

SLEEPING ON THE WRONG PILLOWCASE

That cotton pillowcase that came with your sheet set is not going to cut it (especially if you’ve slept on it for more than a week without washing it). Switch to silk, which has antimicrobial properties to keep germs at bay.

REUSING YOUR WASHCLOTH

A wet washcloth is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and throw them in the washing machine after every shower.

SCRUBBING YOUR FACE WITH BODY EXFOLIANT

Gentle exfoliants (like those little blue beads in your daily face wash) are totally fine. But before you sand off the top layer of your skin with a harsh apricot scrub, remember that overexfoliating can cause even more disruption and breakouts.

PULLING ALL-NIGHTERS

“Beauty sleep” is real. Sure, we can’t always get a perfect eight hours a night, but aiming for at least seven will help your skin produce more collagen and rehydrate as you sleep.

USING OLD MAKEUP BRUSHES

With every use, makeup brushes pick up dead skin cells, oil and bacteria from your face. Reapplying the same dirty stuff to your face the next day can wreak havoc on your skin--wash brushes once a week with good old-fashioned dish soap.

TOUCHING YOUR FACE AT THE GYM

When you’re running a 5K on the treadmill, resist the urge to swipe that annoying piece of hair out of your eyes. The gym is bacteria central, so keep your hands as far away from your face as possible during your workout. Invest in a quick-drying towel instead.

SKIPPING THE SALAD

Drinking water is great, but eating vitamin-packed fruits and veggies is the real key to soft, glowing skin. Even if you add a side salad to your normal lunch (peanut-butter cups and all), your complexion will thank you.
